Football games were a nightmare. As the band marched from the barracks to the stadium, we would pass hundreds of spectators, many of them, wives, mothers, and girlfriends of the cadets. Some of the women taunted me as I walked. Some made fun of me for being ugly or butch, with my hair cut off and my boy's clothes. Others called me a slut or whore, at the Citadel to "do it" with every guy in the Corps. Some called me a dyke who couldn't make it as a woman. Many shouted "you ruined our school!" I kept on marching, eyes straight ahead. Walking to the restroom during games was another ordeal. When I went into the ladies room, the woman would often stare and make sarcastic remarks or tell me to go to the men's room.
