Antonio Villaraigosa on Budget & Economy

Cut city spending to balance budget; keep essentials

The Proposed Budget for FY2011-12 solves the $457 million General Fund deficit by instituting deep and permanent cuts to City spending while providing the necessary resources for essential City services including public safety, library operations, and street preservation and maintenance.

Supports higher debt ceiling to avoid government shutdown

Americans cannot afford the consequences if the country defaults on its debt.

Mayors across the country unanimously resolved that an agreement must be reached to increase the debt ceiling and prevent the nation from defaulting. This can only happen if both Houses and both parties work together with the understanding that sacrifices must be shared. The only long-term solution to our economic crisis is a national investment policy that balances both the needs of deficit reduction and job creation.
