Lamar Alexander on Families & Children

Republican Sr Senator (TN); previously candidate for President

Triple the Dependent Child Deduction to $8000

Since the 1950’s, the federal tax burden on families with children has risen from about 5 percent of the average family’s income in 1950 to nearly 25 percent today. I’d like to relieve this burden on parents raising children by tripling the federal tax deduction for each dependent child from the current $2,700 to $8,000. Tripling the dependent child deduction would be worth $2,500 per year for a family of four with taxable income of $50,000.

Enforce Flextime at work and at schools

I support “flextime” for parents by changing federal law to allow employees to work more one week to take time off the next, or to choose to take their overtime in time off the job instead of additional pay. Today’s 180-day school year and the 8AM to 3PM school day don’t fit the schedules of [most parents]. We should put our schools on the side of parents raising children by offering flexible school hours and extended school years.

Rated 100% by the Christian Coalition: a pro-family voting record.

Alexander scores 100% by the Christian Coalition on family issues

The Christian Coalition was founded in 1989 by Dr. Pat Robertson to give Christians a voice in government. We represent millions of people of faith and enable them to have a strong, unified voice in the conversation we call democracy.

    Our Five-Fold Mission:
  1. Represent the pro-family point of view before local councils, school boards, state legislatures, and Congress
  2. Speak out in the public arena and in the media
  3. Train leaders for effective social and political action
  4. Inform pro-family voters about timely issues and legislation
  5. Protest anti-Christian bigotry and defend the rights of people of faith.
Our ratings are based on the votes the organization considered most important; the numbers reflect the percentage of time the representative voted the organization's preferred position.
