Purple Alert: locate missing adults with mental disabilities

Q: Do you have examples of bipartisan accomplishments?

A: There have been several bills that I have introduced and gotten to the finish line. One example is the Purple Alert system, which helps locate missing adults with mental or cognitive disabilities.

I worked for four years on the Statute of Limitations Reform for survivors of sexual violence. That was a bill I brought forward that nobody wanted to work on because of the sensitivity of the topic, but I worked on it, and then ultimately it passed unanimously. That was a very big effort.

I've been able to get several bills passed despite being in the superminority. I haven't had to compromise my principles. I don't believe in cutting deals in terms of trying to get my bills forward.

I will work with people, and I'll educate them, but I'm not going to trade votes or do things to compromise the integrity of the legislation.
