WV already blocks same-sex marriage; no need for amendment

West Virginia officials maintain there is no need to consider legislation being promoted by a conservative lobbying group that would ban same-sex marriages in the state. Senate President Earl Ray Tomblin told the Family Policy Council of West Virginia that the legislature addressed their issue in 2000. That legislation, Tomblin pointed out, directs state officials to ignore same sex marriages granted elsewhere. It also requires that all marriage applications note that marriage is between a man and a woman.

"I think the senate spoke very clearly," said Tomblin. "The senate is on the record on this issue." Gov. Manchin turned down the group's request to put the issue on his legislative agenda last year. "If that law were in danger of being overturned, the governor would call a special session to address it, " said a Manchin spokesman.
