John Raese on Tax Reform

Republican Challenger

Supports tax cuts to spur economic growth and job growth

I am a Ronald Reagan Republican and I support tax cuts to spur economic growth and job growth. The Reagan tax cuts led to some of the most prosperous years in American history - 22 million new jobs were created in seven years. The Bush tax cuts have also stimulated job growth, but we need to do more and go further. The Bush tax cuts should be made permanent, because if they're not, then when they come off the books we'll be socking Americans with another tax increase they don't need.

Supports flat tax or national sales tax

The tax code needs to be reformed and simplified, and I am open to all proposals for reform including going to a flat tax or a national sales or consumption tax. Interestingly, many Eastern European countries that used to be under the thumb of repressive communism are pressing forward with a flat tax and we could learn a lesson from their enthusiasm to enact a tax code that rewards achievement instead of punishing it.
