Bob Tuke on Homeland Security

Democratic challenger

Supports pay raise & improved equipment for troops

Last night, while thousands of our troops were standing guard for democracy and freedom around the world, Lamar Alexander sat in the halls of the U.S. Senate and voted against the Defense Authorization bill, which includes a pay raise for troops as well as improvements in health care for troops. The bill also contains a critical provision that authorizes $3 billion to help protect our troops from deadly IEDs in Iraq and Afghanistan. These "roadside bombs," which can tear through military vehicles, have been responsible for at least 40% of coalition deaths in Iraq at the end of 2007 and continue to threaten our fighting men and women.

If elected to the Senate, Bob Tuke will never leave our troops and military families wondering if they will get the support they need and deserve. Whether they are here at home or on the frontlines of a distant battlefield, our troops will always be able to count on a Marine back home to stand up for them and to get the job done.

Increase funding for port security

While our nation continues to increase its defenses against global terrorism, one area of growing concern are our nation's ports and shipping container systems, which have been widely held as areas most vulnerable to attack by smuggling in WMDs. Numerous legislative measures have been proposed to reinforce these areas of vulnerability.

But in 2003, Lamar Alexander voted against $1.75 billion in Port Security Funding. Alexander also voted against $135 million in Port Technology Funding, which would increase spending on research and development to help detect explosives onboard container ships entering our ports.

If elected to the Senate, Bob Tuke will work to secure our nation's ports, airports, and borders to prevent future attacks on the US before they happen. Bob Tuke will also work towards a responsible end to the war in Iraq and refocus our military efforts to Pakistan and Afghanistan, where our enemies have always remained since they attacked our nation seven years ago.
