Erik Fleming on Homeland Security

Democratic Senate Challenger

No base closings in US, but close bases overseas

I believe in a strong national defense, so I will oppose any base closings in Mississippi or any other state. I believe with our increased ability to deploy troops and weapons, we should consider closing overseas military operations bases instead and create new multilateral defense treaties that would allow American troops to be stationed at foreign bases to maintain a presence at a streamlined cost to the Department of Defense.

No military tribunals; no email searches; no torture

Q: Do you support using military tribunals to try suspected terrorists instead of ordinary civilian courts?

Yes.

Q: Should the US grant law enforcement agencies greater discretion to read mail and email, tap phones, and conduct random searches to prevent future terrorist attacks?

No.

Q: Do you support the prohibition of torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment of prisoners in U.S. custody?

Yes.

Q: Do you support a policy of pre-emptive military strikes?

No.
