Reverend; Civil Rights Activist; Democratic Candidate for President

Raise CAFE standard from 27.5 mpg to 33, and 25 for SUVs

Q: Would you increase the required automobile fleet average of 27.5 mpg; and SUVs and pickups averaging 20.7 mpg?

A: They should go up to at least 33 on vehicles and up to 24 to 25 with SUVs.

Cap CO2 emissions and re-enter Kyoto discussions

We’ve seen in some of these emission trade agreements that has impacted people wrongly. I would also fight for the absolute cap on carbon dioxide. I would absolutely re-enter the discussions around the Kyoto Accord.

Build hybrid vehicles; raise CAFE to 45 mpg

Q: If it does come down at some point to a choice between jobs and the environment, which is more important?

SHARPTON: We must not allow this administration to continue to use the bogeyman in every argument. They’ve used it to justify Iraq. They’re using it to try and do what they are doing in the environment and to try to stop us from moving from an oil dependent economy. We should not try and act as though we have a choice in terms of moving to what is more efficient, more healthy, more life sustaining and is better for our grandchildren and their grandchildren. So [don’t] act like Americans are so cheap that we would rather be paid than to try and achieve the transfer into hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles.

You need to clear up on oil-based economy, free ourselves. Build jobs by building hybrid vehicles and by building electric vehicles. And as we raise the standards of the corporate average fuel, we should have a goal of trying to do 45 miles per gallon.
