Harry Browne on Energy & Oil

2000 Libertarian Nominee for President

Oppose Kyoto, even if achieved by market mechanisms

Q: Would Browne, if elected President, sign into law or veto a bill which promoted marketable emissions permits as a means to reduce CO2 emissions under the Kyoto Protocol?

A: He would veto it. We oppose Kyoto lock, stock & barrel. Marketable permits are an attempt by the government to set market controls. It’s like that joke: Two Russian women are in a bread line and one complains that it’s too long. The other responds, “Oh, don’t complain, in some countries the government doesn’t even make bread.”

Global Warming inconclusive; too much political agenda

Q: What should be done about Global Warming? A: I believe the science on this matter is far from conclusive. [I] see a political agenda so attached to this issue that virtually any human activity can be blamed for environmental damage. The only solution proposed by many environmentalists is expansion of government and destruction of property rights. Both of those aims will produce exactly the opposite result of the one we supposedly intend.
