Opposes the unrelenting assault on traditional marriage
Sen. Ted Cruz cast himself as a leading Republican opponent of same-sex marriage during an appearance before a crowd of evangelical Christians in Des Moines. Cruz described the ongoing shift toward legal recognition for gay couples as an "unrelenting
assault on traditional marriage," and castigated judges who have struck down prohibitions for "ignoring their oaths, ignoring the Constitution and legislating from the bench."The issue is one that Cruz said distinguishes him from other potential
candidates in what looks to be a crowded 2016 presidential field. While others have de-emphasized or dropped altogether their opposition to same-sex marriage, he said, he would continue to make it a priority.
Cruz delivered his speech to a crowd of about 200 Iowa religious leaders and their spouses behind closed doors in a hotel ballroom in Des Moines.

Mother lost an infant child, Ted's would-be brother
In October 2014, at a women's forum hosted by Palladian View, Ted Cruz spoke about his mother Eleanor's life: She "has had its ups and downs--she's had her challenges." "My mom when she came out of school she was shortly thereafter married.
She had a son, a son named Michael. When he was just a few months old, my mom woke up and she found Michael dead in his crib. It crippled her.
It ended up breaking up her first marriage. To this day, I don't know anyone who is more strongly pro-life than my mother is when you see a baby taken from you far too early it makes it personal."
"My mom has been a best friend my whole life and she has been an incredibly fantastic grandmother for our two little girls," said Ted Cruz.

Alcoholic father gave his life to Christ
In 2014, Cruz spoke publicly about his troubled early childhood for the first time. He told the Values Voter Summit that his parents were alcoholics: "When I was a little kid, my parents were working in the oil and gas industry up in Calgary, Canada.
They both drank far too much. My dad, when I was 3 years old, decided he didn't want to be here anymore, that he didn't want to be a dad. So my dad got on a plane and he flew back to Houston. So my mother found herself a single mom with a toddler son.
When my dad got to Houston, a colleague of his in the oil and gas industry--he invited him to go to pray. He went to Church and he gave his life to Jesus. It turned his life around. He went to the airport and bought himself an airline ticket and got
on a plane and he flew back to Calgary to be with my mom.""If it were not for my father giving his life to Christ, I would have been raised by a single mother."--Cruz said that story proves to him "faith is real."

Read "Green Eggs & Ham" to his kids during Senate filibuster
His iPhone is full of photos of Caroline Camille and Catherine Christiane, but the one he likes most is the one of them listening to him on TV when he read them Green Eggs and Ham during his 21-hour Senate filibuster. They were in their pajamas, their
laughing faces all lit up with joy. He mentions: "Absolutely nothing I have done in the U.S. Senate has impressed Caroline one bit except for reading Green Eggs and Ham. She said, "OK, Dad, that was pretty cool."
While she is home most nights, on the night of her husband's 21-hour filibuster speech, Mrs. Cruz happened to be out of town for work. When Cruz's chief of staff called her for a suggestion for a bedtime story he could read to his girls from the
Senate floor, she recommended her husband's favorite "Green Eggs and Ham." After the bedside story was red, supporters of the health care law said Dr. Seuss had the same message they did: "That if you try something, you just might like it."
