Amy Klobuchar: I don't think manure is toxic waste

[At the Farmfest debate in August 2006], Congressman Kennedy and I got questions about renewable fuels, rural development, dairy and crop programs. But the most memorable part of the debate focused on--of all things--manure.

As the Owatonna People's Press reported: "Kennedy came out swinging first, telling the crowd that Klobuchar is supported by an special interest group--the League of Conservation Voters, which he never named from the stage--that considers manure a toxic waste."

"I don't want to get into the manure here," I shot back, "but I don't think manure is a toxic waste." After the debate, I quipped: "If he wants to go down into the manure, I will go down with him."

The media couldn't help but take it from there. "Politicians spread manure at Farmfest," the headline in the Mankato Free Press reported after the debate. "Kennedy's manure spin just doesn't pass the smell test," Willmar's West Central Tribune chimed in. I couldn't have said it better myself.

Chris Coleman: Commit to sustainable urban living & urban reforestation

Mayor Chris Coleman and the Saint Paul City Council are committed to making Saint Paul "The Most Livable City in America" and a leader in sustainable urban living. The City is taking proactive steps to protect our city's air, water, and urban landscape by focusing on Carbon Dioxide (CO2) reduction activities in the areas of energy efficiency and conservation, clean energy supply, alternative fuels and transportation options, recycling and waste reduction, urban reforestation and natural resources management, and water resources management.

The City encourages everyone to contribute to a sustainable urban living environment, and each year the Mayor and Saint Paul City Council recognizes community members and organizations for making a commitment to creating a more sustainable city through the Sustainable Saint Paul Awards.

Dean Barkley: Worked as a tobacco lobbyist

Barkley went bare-knuckled at his better-financed, big-party rivals, saying their campaigns have been corrupted by special interest money and negativity.

Responding to Barkley’s charge that he was beholden to big oil companies and other special interests, Coleman said Barkley is one to talk; he worked as a tobacco lobbyist. “We have real problems out there, real challenges,” Coleman said. “In the end it’s about who can work out there and who can solve it.”

Heather Johnson: Those who harm the environment should pay for cleanup

Q: Do you believe there are no 'rights' to clean air and water?

A: Libertarians believe businesses have a right to operate. Humans have a right to life, liberty, and property. However, we also believe we each are entirely responsible for the results of exercising our rights. So a business or person who does harm upon the environment or others must also clean it up and pay restitution wherever possible. Additionally, we advocate competitive alternate sources of energy, food, housing, and fuel.

Kurt Bills: Help small farmers with crop insurance and loan programs

The farm bill, which is currently stalled in the House, got repeated attention. Bills said afterward that he would support much more modest legislation that would focus on helping small farmers with crop insurance and loan programs at the expense of large corporations. "Not for the big guy," he said, "For the little guy." Bills also said he would have supported a House measure that offered drought protection and disaster assistance for livestock producers.
