Eric Holcomb: Levels of Care program: Reduce infant mortality

You all approved our "Levels of Care" program to assure that the highest-risk babies are delivered at hospitals with the right facilities to meet the needs of moms and infants. Now we're seeking to implement two more programs that aim directly at reducing infant mortality: A navigator program to help guide high-risk pregnant women and a program to verbally screen all expecting mothers for substance use disorder so those who need it will be connected to treatment.

Todd Young: House Adoption Caucus: raise awareness of foster parenting

Todd knows that life begins at conception, and that the right to life: just like the right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness: is of utmost importance. He also knows not every woman is prepared to raise a child. That's why Todd is also a strong advocate of adoption: support which stretches back to Todd's time in the private sector. When he was practicing law with his wife, they provided legal services related to adoption free of charge to any couple trying to adopt. He also served on the board of Hannah House, a non-profit crisis pregnancy center that focused on adoption as an alternative to abortion.

As a member of the House Adoption Caucus, he's trying to raise awareness of adoption opportunities right here in Indiana.

Mike Pence: Let parents and doctors decide on HPV vaccinations

Gov. Mike Pence says he lobbied against legislation encouraging more young people to get vaccinated against HPV because of concerns about government mandates. The proposed House bill set a goal for the state to have 80 percent of 13 -15 year olds vaccinated against HPV by 2020.

HPV is a virus linked to several forms of cancer, including cervical cancer, and only around 20 percent of Hoosiers are currently vaccinated against it. The bill was defeated after several lawmakers voiced concerns about the state requiring parents to vaccinate.

Pence says setting a goal could lead to a vaccination requirement. "I just think this is a matter better left to parents in consultation with their doctors," Pence says. He says the state already does enough by providing information to parents about the vaccine.

Charlie Hardy: Many parents worry about not providing for their children

Hardy spoke to a couple dozen supporters who braved the snow and bitter cold to crowd into his campaign office in downtown Cheyenne. He told them he's running because many parents in Wyoming worry about not having enough money to provide for their children.

"There are sick people in Wyoming who are unable to go and get medical attention they want. There are kids who want to continue their education, but they can't. We must run, and we must win because of all of these things," he said.

Mike Pence: Adoption is a beautiful way for families to come together

Families come together in many different ways. Like the family of Karen Sauer. Karen is a single mom who felt called to adopt. She adopted her two children, Neven and Dusten, when they were 11 and 12 years old, after they had both been in foster care for some time.

Karen says people always tell her she's changing her kids' lives. She says, "They are changing mine." Please join me in welcoming Karen and her children tonight.

Adoption is a beautiful way for families to come together forever. We can better support families like Karen's by expanding and improving adoption in Indiana. We can improve the way we place children from state care into adoptive homes, and we can support every parent who is willing to lovingly adopt a child into their home. Let's make it our aim to make Indiana the most pro-adoption state in America.

Todd Rokita: Background checks & FBI screening for every school worker

A 2010 GAO report examined 15 cases where individuals with histories of sexual misconduct were hired or retained as teachers, support staff, and volunteers. The GAO report found that states don't consistently perform pre-employment background checks, and when they do, they are not always fingerprinted or connected to the national criminal database.

We have worked to ensure that every school employee--from the cafeteria workers, to the administrators, to the janitors--that everyone is subject to a complete background check that includes the FBI fingerprint identification system and the National Sex Offender Registry.

Today, we have an opportunity to finish the fight by sending this bill, the Protecting Students From Sexual and Violent Predators Act, to the Senate. H.R. 2083 will require states to ensure that each school employee is subject to a complete national criminal background check. This commonsense legislation will help ensure students are safe from sexual criminals.

Mitch Daniels: Nothing more contemptible than failing to pay child support

There is no one more contemptible to me than a person who brings a child into this world and then fails to live up to the duties of parenthood. And for those who compound their absence by refusing their court-ordered duty to pay child support, I have eve less respect.

We have raised the percentage of child support collected from about 50% to 58%. We need new tools to make further headway. For instance, a delinquent father who wins money in one of our casinos [must] share the take with his children.
