Ron DeSantis on Families & Children

No tax on diapers or cribs or any baby items

Q: During CNN's debate last week, you said, "Republicans need to do a better job lifting up folks who are having children." Given that, do you support the bill to expand the child tax credit for low-income families?

DeSANTIS: The American dream is slipping away from people. There are people that are working hard, getting the most out of their God-given ability, doing everything they can to put food on the table, to raise their families, and they are falling further and further behind. I think government's role--in Florida, we've taken steps to help families. For example, we eliminated all sales tax on every baby item. So, you're raising babies tax-free in the state of Florida -- no tax on diapers, wipes, cribs, strollers, none of that. [On the child tax credit], I can't speak to the specifics of that bill, but my view on economics is: hard work has to pay off in this country. And if we can get that where people are getting ahead, we're going to be able to reinvigorate the American dream.

Don't sexualize school curriculum, or Disney World

Q: You used your powers in Florida to take on Disney after the company criticized an education bill that you signed into law. How does that square with the traditional conservative view that small, limited government is best?

DESANTIS: The proper role of government is to protect our kids. And I have stood for the innocence of our kids. It is wrong to sexualize the curriculum. It's wrong to tell a kindergartner, like Disney wanted to do, that you can change your gender or tell a third grader that you're born in the wrong body. So I stood up against it--yes, the media didn't like it, the left didn't like it, and Disney didn't like it. Most people, most corporate Republicans would have caved. I stood and I fought for the kids. We took on Disney, and we won that fight and our kids are better off.

Now, we believe in empowering parents, and there are certain standards about what's age and developmentally appropriate. It's wrong to have pornographic materials in fourth or fifth grade.

We lead the nation in protecting the rights of parents

We lead the nation in school choice. Last session, under the leadership of Speaker Renner, we enacted the largest expansion of school choice in American history. Florida has close to 1.5 million students enrolled full-time in various choice programs-- from private scholarships to charter schools to choice options within school districts.

We also lead the nation in protecting the rights of parents. School systems are important, but they exist to serve the students, parents and the community, not to supersede the rights of parents to direct the education and upbringing of their children. We were one of the first states to enact a Parents' Bill of Rights and curriculum transparency.

We protected women's sports--as the father of two daughters I think it is important that they have the opportunity to compete with fairness and integrity. We protected our children from indoctrination and sexualized curriculum, and we stood up for parents against the woke mob

Sex change operations in teens is gender mutilation

Gov. Ron DeSantis: I am sick of Republicans who are not willing to stand up and fight back against what the left is doing to this country. You've got to be willing to stand strong, and beat these people. I'm the only one running for president that has beaten these people on issue after issue. I have delivered results. Other candidates like Nikki Haley, she caves anytime the left comes after her, anytime the media comes after her. I did a bill in Florida to stop the gender mutilation of minors; it's child abuse and it's wrong. She opposes that bill. If you're not willing to stand up for the kids, if you're not willing to stand up and say that it is wrong to mutilate these kids, then you're not going to fight for the people back home. I will fight for you and I will win for you.

Gov. Nikki Haley: I actually said his "Don't Say Gay" bill didn't go far enough because it only talked about gender until the third grade and I said it shouldn't be done at all that, that's for parents to talk about.

Disallow men from going into little girls' bathrooms

Ron DeSantis: I signed legislation in Florida banning the mutilation of minors because it is wrong. Nikki disagrees with me. She opposes the bill that we did to ban [transgender surgery on minors]. She said the law shouldn't get involved with it. Also in South Carolina, they had a bill to try to say that men shouldn't go into girls' bathrooms and she killed that bill and she bragged that she killed that bill. I don't think men should be going into little girls' bathrooms. I think it's wrong and I think we have every right to protect them from that.

Nikki Haley: When I was governor, I said boys go into boys' bathrooms, girls go into girls' bathrooms and if anyone else has an issue, they use a private bathroom. When Ron was running for governor, he said he didn't think bathroom bills were a good use of his time.

Ron DeSantis: I signed a bathroom bill in Florida, so that's obviously not true. I signed it, you didn't. You killed it. I signed it. I stood up for little girls.

Protect faith-based noncooperation with gay marriage

Q: Support gay marriage?

Ron DeSantis (R): No. Cosponsored bill to protect individuals for faith-based noncooperation with gay marriage.

Andrew Gillum (D): Yes. While Tallahassee mayor invited same-sex couples to get married there when refused in other FL counties.
