Dwight Eisenhower: More funds for wildlife refuges and recreational areas

The year 1958 saw, for example, the passage of legislation to provide more funds for acquiring wildlife refuges and to make the improvement of fish and wildlife resources a specific purpose in federal water resource construction; legislation long urged by conservationists was enacted to make applicable on military lands the fishing, hunting, and trapping laws of the states and territories in which such lands are located. A commission was established to survey the future needs of our expanding population for recreational areas.
