Deb Haaland on Drugs

Member of Cannabis Caucus, co-sponsor of MORE Act

The Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act of 2019 aims to repair damage done to communities of color and low-income communities by requiring resentencing and expungement of prior convictions. "The MORE Act is the first step to addressing policies that criminalize people of color. As a co-sponsor of this bill, I'm proud to take this step and I hope my colleagues in the Senate will take a stand for justice," said Congresswoman Haaland, a member of the Cannabis Caucus.

Introduced amendment to protect Tribal cannabis programs

Earlier in her first term, Representative Haaland introduced the first Tribal cannabis amendment ever offered and passed on the House floor. The amendment, introduced as part of the Fiscal Year '20 Department of Justice (DOJ) funding package, protects Tribal cannabis programs from interference from the DOJ.

Addiction counseling/treatment centers need full funding

[AJ]: What should be done at the federal level to address the crisis of opioid addiction? [DH]: We need Medicare For All so everyone has access to health care. We must fully fund addiction counseling and treatment centers; encourage pharmaceutical manufacturers to create a profit model that is less reliant on opioids; and legalize cannabis on a federal level or allow for regulation on a state-by-state basis. Cannabis has been effective for treatment of pain and anxiety rather than opioid.

Haaland supports the PVS survey question on recreational marijuana

Project Vote Smart inferred whether candidates agree or disagree with the statement, 'Marijuana: Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?' PVS self-description: "The Political Courage Test provides voters with positions on key issues. Historically, candidates have failed to complete our test due to the advice they receive from their advisors and out of fear of negative attack ads."
