Pete Buttigieg on Abortion

Democratic Presidential Challenger; IN Mayor

Offered anti-abortion clinic help away from abortion clinic

An abortion clinic--[in] a city without a single provider--was trying to open. A crisis pregnancy center was trying to open up directly next door. Buttigieg eventually barred the CPC from its desired location. But he did so without ever taking a stand on reproductive rights. He even offered to "help" the anti-abortion organization open elsewhere, despite evidence that the vast majority of crisis pregnancy centers provide false or misleading information to the women they claim to serve.

Federal government should protect reproductive freedom

When asked about the Hyde amendment, which prohibits women from using government health insurance to get an abortion and could lead to abortions being outlawed under "Medicare for all," Buttigieg said he supported repeal. "I think the federal government has become too much of a pressure against women's reproductive freedoms, and we need to make sure that even though a lot of decisions are being made in the states, we have that leadership from the top of the federal government," Buttigieg said.

Personal choice is best for abortion's moral decision

If elected, Pete Buttigieg (boot-a-judge, often referred to as "Mayor Pete"), the 37-year-old mayor of South Bend, Indiana, would be the youngest U.S. president ever. Said on Meet the Press that abortion is a "question that is almost unknowable ... a moral question that is not going to be settled by science. So the best way for it to be settled in practice is by the person who actually faces the choice."

Abortion is moral question decided by woman, not government

In my view, this is a question that is almost unknowable. This is a moral question that's not going to be settled by science. And so the best way for it to be settled in practice is by the person who actually faces the choice. And when a woman is facing this decision in her life, I think in terms of somebody besides her who can most be useful in that, the answer to that would be a doctor. Not a male government official imposing his interpretation of his religion.

Abortion is a woman's choice, not a political statement

Buttigieg has not made abortion rights a major focus of his campaign. But he has spoken on the issue. Asked in February for his thoughts on a New York state law lifting some restrictions on abortion, he identified himself as pro-choice. "These questions ought to be resolved by women in consultation with their doctors, not by the intervention of male politicians putting politically motivated restrictions on women's health care ," he said.
