Pete Buttigieg on Budget & Economy

Democratic Presidential Challenger; IN Mayor

Invest in infrastructure, get pandemic behind us

For the long term, the best thing we can do is invest in our infrastructure. For the very short time, there are steps we can take in and around the ports that we think are helping. And in the medium-term, again, at risk of repeating myself, if we really want to see all of these disruptions end, we've got to end the pandemic. That's what getting everybody vaccinated is all about.

Led on local transportation issues as mayor

City leaders have to make sure the potholes -- which Buttigieg has called the natural enemy of every mayor -- are filled. During his time as mayor, Buttigieg championed the "Smart Streets" project, which he has credited with generating $90 million in private investment. Buttigieg has also been a vocal advocate for extending the South Shore Line to downtown South Bend by 2025, a costly endeavor that would make it easier for people to travel between the city and Chicago.

Redesigned streets proved safer & increased property values

The South Bend streets that Buttigieg redesigned had fewer severe pedestrian crashes, according to Santiago Garces, who served as Buttigieg's chief innovation officer in South Bend. There were also fewer empty store fronts and higher property value, he said. One-way streets were converted to two-ways, bike lanes were added, and sidewalks were widened. Biden has called for installing infrastructure for pedestrians and bicyclists, and Buttigieg's South Bend experiences may prove valuable.

This economy works for Wall Street, but not for middle class

Where I live folks aren't measuring the economy by how the Dow Jones is looking, they're measuring the economy by how they're doing. When you're doing the bills at the end of the month at your kitchen table, and you find that, even if your wages have gone up, is not nearly going as fast as the cost of healthcare. This economy is not working for the middle class.

Government investment can help minority businesses

We're talking about generational poverty, generational dispossession that's a result of a combination of racist policies over the years and the effect that poverty and mass incarceration have. We're investing in neighborhoods that have been historically disinvested in. We opened a small business resource center in an area that was not getting the kind of attention that it needed because we know that entrepreneurship will empower not just minority business owners, but minority employees.

We should support workers going through changes

It's not about stopping or reversing technology. It is about making sure that the tectonic social and economic changes can actually work for us. Our generation is likely to change careers more frequently than our parents changed job titles. We've got to make it less of a disruptive event when those changes occur. It's why we need portable benefits. It's why the conversation about Medicare-for-all is so important. It's why we might need to look at guaranteed income for working people.
