Voluntary CO2 reductions are just more procrastination

Bush says he believes global climate change is taking place and that it has been caused or accelerated by human activity. "I recognize the surface of the earth is warmer and that an increase in greenhouse gases caused by humans is contributing to the problem," he grudgingly admitted during a 2005 trip to Scotland. Of course, this statement--which merely served to preface yet another criticism of the Kyoto agreement on climate change--came after years of the usual "more study needed" procrastination (not that he isn't still punting the issue down the road by claiming more study is still needed before we can decide on a course of action).

The White House has consistently opposed taxes or regulations or mandatory caps to reduce, or even just stabilize, greenhouse-gas emissions, advocating instead a purely voluntary approach, under which companies and individuals can choose to cut their CO2 production--that is, if they feel like.

Stress fuel efficiency; invest in clean & renewable energy

On Protecting California’s Environment: Arianna will champion a sane energy policy that protects the environment, stresses fuel efficiency, and invests in clean and renewable energy. As governor, she will make sure that the state government uses clean and renewable energy as much as possible. Continued reliance on petroleum and fossil fuels is one of the chief dangers facing California today.
