Bob Dole on Gun Control

Former Republican Senator (KS)

Repeal the ban on assault weapons

Earlier in March, Dole had met with the NRA people. On March 18, 1995, a report said that Dole had sent a letter to the NRA promising to seek repeal of the "ill-conceived" ban on assault weapons passed the previous year in Clinton's crime bill. The letter said Dole hoped to have a bill on Clinton's desk this summer. Some pro-gun staff member had drafted the letter and the final copy hadn't even been signed by Dole. The letter was strong and went beyond the meeting and now that the letter was out, the Democrats were hollering bloody murder.

Dole, who had voted against the assault ban the previous year, nonetheless, wished he could have the letter back. The campaign didn't want to flip-flop on any issue. And no Senate office wanted to acknowledge that many, many letters--even important ones--went out without the senator reading them carefully, if at all. He wasn't ready to label it a mistake in public, and he wasn't sure if it would be an act of political courage to reverse himself.
