Shaun Donovan on Principles & Values

Volunteered in a homeless shelter during college

Deeply affected by the crisis he saw around him growing up, he volunteered in a homeless shelter during college and interned for the National Coalition for the Homeless when he graduated. After studying housing in graduate school, he returned to work for the nonprofit Community Preservation Corporation in the Bronx and across New York City.

Organize "15-minute neighborhoods," a short walk to things

He brings unique ideas to the race like "15-minute neighborhoods," where residents live just a short walk from a good school, rapid transit, a place to buy fresh food, and a park. "They have all the things you need to live a life of opportunity. Staten Islanders don't know that," he said. "I'm proposing to reorganize the way we plan and put money into neighborhoods in New York City, so that we prioritize making every neighborhood a 15-minute neighborhood."
