Sierra Club on Immigration

Limiting immigration perhaps curbs population growth damage

A bitter internal dispute over whether to advocate tough immigration policies as a way to curb environmental damage associated with rapid population growth has left the leadership of the 112-year-old Sierra Club sharply divided. [Members of the pro- immigration faction] contend that members of the anti-immigration faction have ties to racist groups or are unwittingly supporting a network of nativist groups that wants to wrest control of the organization [by board of directors elections].

According to Census Bureau statistics, about 45% of US population gain over the past decade is a result of direct immigration.

Because the organization's board already includes several members who have challenged other directors on immigration and development issues, the election of more [anti-immigration] directors could alter the group's positions on everything from immigration to regional and local development.
