Angus King on Gun Control

Independent Former ME Governor

Implement red flag laws; expand background checks

Gun Laws: Loosen or tighten gun regulation?

Angus King (I): Tighten. Sponsored a bill regulating semi-automatic firearms with exemptions for self-defense and hunting. Voted to implement red flag laws, expand background checks, and close the "boyfriend loophole."

Demi Kouzounas (R): Loosen. People buy guns "to defend their homes" and "protect their families." In 2019 criticized Democrats for "wanting to... jail law abiding gun owners."

Supports gun rights

King would pass a general Democratic litmus test: He is prochoice on abortion, supports gay marriage, backs President Obama's health care law, and opposes GOP efforts to transform Medicare into a voucher program.

But he insists that he has conservative values when it comes to fiscal responsibility. "I think you should have a 'pay-as-you-go' system,'' he said. Also, he supports gun rights and endorsed George W. Bush in 2000 (although not for reelection).

No gun permits for men under restraining orders

For too many of our citizens, day to day life is a living hell of fear of the monstrous violence that takes place behind closed doors. We can pass laws, add judges and DAs-and we will-but this scourge will not pass until we decide once and for all as a people that it is not acceptable, cool, cute, or a symbol of macho power to beat up on women or children. I can’t imagine anything less macho than a grown man hitting a kid. If you think back 20 years, we came to a similar point with driving drunk and we toughened the laws, but we also just plain stopped tolerating it.

And so tonight, let’s start that process of change-first by committing ourselves to enforce the law-in my view, the rule should be zero tolerance-abuse of women and children in Maine will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted. Let’s send this message by preventing someone under a protective order as a result of domestic violence from getting a permit to carry a concealed weapon. This isn’t gun control, it’s common sense.

Restrict right to bear arms, according to CC survey.

King supports the CC survey question on Second Amendment

The Christian Coalition Voter Guide inferred whether candidates agree or disagree with the statement, 'Further Restrictions on the Right to Keep and Bear Arms' Christian Coalition's self-description: "Christian Voter Guide is a clearing-house for traditional, pro-family voter guides. We do not create voter guides, nor do we interview or endorse candidates."
