During the race, Schundler cast many issues as matters of morality rather than practicality.
Schunder appealed to the right-leaning segment of his party, by condemning abortion and by favoring looser gun laws, along with standard Republican chestnuts like supporting lower taxes.

Require parental notification
Schundler says parents should be told when their children seek birth control or treatment for drug addiction. He proposes notifying parents whenever their children face serious, life-altering choices. He says parents not only should be told when their
kids want an abortion, but when they want to obtain birth control or get counseling for drug or alcohol abuse. “Before the government does something to your child, parents should be notified,” he says.

Attends marches at abortion clinics
Schundler made friends in the anti-abortion movement by attending rallies against an abortion clinic in Montclair, an activist says. “He has shown up there, without press, to march with us, to walk with us, and pray with us.
That means a lot to grass roots people.”

Abortion is not moral; larger government role warranted
Schundler says he believes government should stay out of people’s lives, but sees no conflict with his support for a larger government role in the abortion issue. “Government’s first responsibility is to secure our rights,
including our right to life,” he says.
Through much of his life, Schundler supported abortion rights. But after much soul-searching he changed his mind in 1995, deciding “abortion is not moral.”
