Bret Schundler on Tax Reform

Former Republican Candidate NJ Governor

Lower property tax bills

If Bret Schundler is elected Governor, you will get lower municipal taxes. He will say “no” to the special interests wanting your state tax dollars, so he can help New Jersey’s municipalities lower your property tax bill.

Index income tax rates to limit inflationary effects

New Jerseyans are paying a higher percentage of their income to the state government than ever before. Bret Schundler will index New Jersey’s income tax rates, so inflation does not automatically push taxpayers into higher tax brackets.

Lower tolls and taxes

Promising lower tolls and taxes, Schundler offered a focused message that appealed to a conservative wing of the party. Schundler told the crowd, “Some people say it’s impossible to get taxes down. It’s not impossible; we did that in Jersey City. What is impossible is for so many of our citizens across the state to find a way to pay those taxes. We have to do better and we can do better. And the way to have it happen is to have the strength to say no to all those special interests who want more of your money.“

Schundler [first won] in 1991 riding public anger over Gov. Jim Florio’s tax increases to veto-proof margins in the Assembly and Senate. [This year], he focused his late-spring campaign on less divisive issues. He promised to eliminate tolls on the Garden State Parkway, although he did not say how, to cut state income taxes by indexing tax brackets to inflation, and to deliver property tax relief by steering taxpayer dollars to private schools.

Moral responsibility to get taxes down

“We have a moral responsibility to get taxes down,” Schundler told his supporters. “Some people say it’s impossible, but I tell you it is not. What is impossible is for so many of our citizens across our state to find a way to pay those taxes.” During the race, Mr. Schundler emphasized bread-and- butter issues like cutting taxes and ending parkway tolls, and casting many issues as matters of morality rather than practicality.
