Grace Ross on Jobs

Federal workfare rules violate minimum wages rules

Q: How would you have voted on the Jul 14, 2005 House vote: Studying how MA can overcome federal workfare rules?

A: Yes, absolutely, the federal rules have been correctly attacked as a violation of minimum wages rules, increasing the downward pressure on wages - especially as most of the economy continues in recession and living wage jobs remain unattainable by so many. Workfare rules include none of the regular work standards such as holidays or sick days and many recipients are penialized because no where near enough such slots exist. In addition, Massachusetts continues to exempt those with health barriers to performing workfare - unlike, for instance, the case in New ork, where a one armed woman lost all welfare payments for herself and her children because she was forced to participate in workfare requirements and could not perform at the same pace as her two-armed welfare recipient sisters.
