Supreme Court ok's immigration status checks
Arizona SB 1070 was the broadest and strictest anti-illegal immigration measure during 2010. Federal law requires all aliens over the age of 14 to register with the US government after 30 days, and to have registration documents in their possession at
all times. The Arizona act additionally made it a state misdemeanor crime for an alien to be in Arizona without carrying the required documents, required that state law enforcement officers attempt to determine an individual's immigration status during
a "lawful stop."Critics of the legislation say it encourages racial profiling, while supporters say the law prohibits the use of race as the sole basis for investigating immigration status.
The Act was signed into law by Gov. Brewer in April 2010.
A federal judge blocked the law's most controversial provisions. In June 2012, the Supreme Court upheld the provision requiring immigration status checks during law enforcement stops but struck down three other provisions.

AZ passed bill because feds wouldn't secure border
The story of SB 1070 is the story of an arrogant, out of control federal government. The people of Arizona watched for years as our border went unenforced, as our schools and hospitals became overwhelmed with poor,
desperate illegal aliens, and finally, as violent crime invaded our cities when the Mexican drug cartels took over the border crossings.

Curb illegals with more border security and enforcing laws
We need a new border fence, particularly where the traffic is heaviest. We need a robust National Guard that sticks around to get the job done. We need to reimburse border states for the costs
illegal aliens place on them, especially in terms of incarceration. And we need to enforce our laws against illegal immigration.

The Constitution mandates federal protection of the states
I've always been idealistic about Americans. I live in the best state in the greatest country in the world. I thought that if I was conscientious and had the people with me, I could expect those who call themselves our leaders to give me a fair hearing.
I am fighting Washington to make it do what it's supposed to do. The Constitution is very clear. Article IV, Section 4 imposes on the federal government the duty to "protect each state against Invasion . domestic Violence."

Wrote four letters to Obama justifying S.B.1070
The passage of Arizona Senate Bill 1070 forced Obama into a choice: Let the law take effect on July 29 even though he disagreed with it? Or encourage the federal government to file a lawsuit against one of its own states, an unusual move that would mean
fighting Arizona in court?Other leaders had bombarded Obama with mail on both sides, illuminating little more than the divisiveness of the immigration debate. Felipe Calderon, the president of Mexico, wrote that SB1070 would promote "intolerance, hate
and discrimination." Rick Perry, the governor of Texas, wrote, "on any given day, the Mexican border region is now beset with vicious murders, tortures, kidnappings and armed confrontations."
But lately, Obama's most frequent mailer had become Gov. Jan
Brewer herself, the architect of SB1070. She sent memos about illegal immigration to the White House on March 11, April 6, May 20, and June 24. Obama never responded, so Brewer made each letter longer and more indignant than the last.

Deport illegals: attrition through enforcement
Brewer met with Obama in the Oval Office. She brought a lawyer and an adviser, setting the scene for a conversation with little common ground. Brewer defended SB1070; Obama argued the law would break apart families, encourage racial profiling, and make
Hispanics so afraid of police that they would be less likely to report major crimes or assist with investigations. Brewer wanted to deport Arizona's illegal immigrants--"attrition through enforcement," she called it; Obama believed in a "pathway to
citizenship," in which illegal immigrants would be forced to register, pay a fine, and learn English before applying for permanent residency. Brewer said the federal government had "failed" on immigration14 days later, Brewer filmed a television
advertisement near the border, wagging her finger at the camera and saying, "Mr. President, do your job!" 23 days later, with Obama's encouragement, the Justice Department filed a lawsuit in district court, asking a judge to declare SB1070 "invalid."

Refuse to back down when S.B.1070 ruled unconstitutional
SB1070 was scheduled to become law in sixteen hours when a district judge finally announced her last-minute ruling on the lawsuit brought by Obama and the Justice Department. Much of the bill was unconstitutional, Judge Susan Bolton said.
Bolton concluded that the law would interfere with federal immigration laws and create "substantial likelihood" that some immigrants with legal status would be wrongfully arrested, she said. But even as the judge spoke,
Brewer set up a press conference at the Arizona governor's mansion to announce that she would appeal the ruling. "This fight is far from over," she said.
Brewer's popularity continued to skyrocket. She trumpeted her "refusal to back down" and
became a heroine of the far right. The president, meanwhile, sent unmanned aircraft drones to monitor the border and deported record numbers of illegal immigrants--efforts Brewer called "vastly insufficient."

Feds refuse to pay for costs of illegal immigration
Our federal government has reached new levels of arrogance, foolishness and disregard for the Constitution. The biggest external threat to our budget comes from the federal government--oppressive health care mandates, job-killing environmental
restrictions, and continual refusal to pay for costs associated with illegal immigration. And they're just getting warmed up!The federal government is also failing to control our southern border and refusing to pay for its failure. As you know,
I have ordered the Arizona Department of Corrections to return to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement--as soon as possible--all non-violent criminal aliens for immediate deportation as allowed under existing law.
The cost of
incarcerating these criminal aliens is not Arizona's responsibility. It is Washington's legal and moral obligation. This is both insult and injury to Arizona taxpayers. Enough is enough. Secure our border.
