Mitch Daniels on Abortion
Republican IN Governor

A reliable advocate of right to life
I have been a reliable advocate of the right to life. My administration commenced regulation of abortion clinics, which had enjoyed a special status of non-inspection. We also enacted an "informed consent" law that requires women who seek abortions
be provided with specific information at least 18 hours before undergoing the procedure. A 2011 enactment added notification that the unborn child can feel pain, and moved the deadline permissible for abortions back to 20 weeks.

Declare truce on abortion Issue
Is it possible that, as one step toward the rescue of our republic, we might declare a sort of truce on our other differences? I choose the word TRUCE here specifically because it must be totally mutual. The endless debate over abortion is such an issue
For weeks the abortion issue dominated coverage of the ObamaCare struggle, leaving many citizens with the impression that the risk of more abortions was the biggest or even the sole defect with the president's atrocious measure.
I submit the suggestion temporarily to set aside our social issues only as a matter of prioritization in the face of what I believe to be a genuine emergency, and in the cause of assembling the extraordinarily broad coalition that will be needed
to do "the impossible." If America goes broke, suffering will come to gays and straights, men and women, pro-life and pro-choice advocates, and to people of all races.

No stem-cell research; private funds ok for adult stem cells
Q: Do you support state funding of stem cell research? A: No.
Q: Do you support state funding of embryonic stem cell research?
A: No.
Q: Do you support allowing pharmacists who conscientiously object to emergency contraception to refuse to
dispense it?
A: Yes.
Daniels adds, "I have no moral objection to research conducted on adult stem cells. In fact, some very interesting and important work in this area is being done at the Indiana
University School of Medicine. I do not in principle oppose state support for such research, but in general I believe that our state's limited resources for investment should be focused on later stage research efforts that can
support the commercialization of new discoveries and the creation of new companies and jobs from them. If/when adult stem cell research gets to that stage, state investment may make sense."

Legal abortion for rape, incest, or medical danger
Indicate which principles you support regarding abortion. - Abortions should be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape.
- Abortions should be legal when the life of the woman is endangered.
