We must admit we have a spending problem

Before we even begin a conversation about the federal debt, we have to do something many Washington politicians refuse to do: We must admit we have a spending problem. We also have to recognize that our debt problem is a bipartisan failure. These problems didn't appear overnight. They were created by years of short sightedness, poor decision-making and overspending by both Democrats and Republicans alike.

President Obama, when he was a U.S. Senator, called the 2006 debt ceiling increase a "sign of leadership failure." He was right. It is a moral failure that our politicians--both Republicans and Democrats--continue to spend at unprecedented levels that must be paid for by future generations. We must reform federal spending in order to preserve our way of life for the future.
