A: Most people, if you said, 'Okay, here's a candidate who was born and raised in a small town, in a rural area far away from the big city, whose faith is the primary motivator in their life, who owns guns, including handguns, and who likes to hunt and fish.' They'd go, 'Oh, they're a Republican.' But I just described myself. For a lot of people, they want to vote for someone that they feel like understands and appreciates their way of life.

It's been almost 15 years since Iowa has had a Democratic governor. But Sand believes that he connects with both Democrats and Republicans. "Born and raised in a small town, I like to hunt and fish, own guns, including handguns. My faith is a really big motivator of what I do. That doesn't sound like a lot of people in my party if you listen to what I say, I believe that doesn't sound like your usual politician," said Sand.
