Rob Sand on Education

Center public schools as the source of education in Iowa

As part of his media availability ahead of the town hall, Sand took a question from this newspaper regarding public education in rural districts and the ever-increasing struggle to remain viable. When asked what was going to happen to public schools under a possible Sand administration, he replied, "We're going to have more support for them. If I'm governor, we center public schools as the source of education in the state of Iowa."

Focus more heavily on preschoolers and elementary school

[On educational reform in Cedar Rapids town hall]: "If we were focused more heavily on preschoolers and elementary school, it would make the job better for everybody, because then you're going to be sending more kids into middle school and high school who are at the level they're expected to be at," state auditor Rob Sand said.

Tax dollars sent to private schools not subject to audit

When private schools receive tax dollars, they are not obligated to have annual audits or examinations, there are no requirements for open meetings, and parents have no legal right to see records or attend meetings at will. In fact, private school administrators can spend your tax dollars on steak dinners and wine for prospective parents for students they want to recruit, and that's totally legal--and nearly impossible to find out about!
