Chris Lugo on Immigration

Green challenger

Treat immigrant workers fairly with regards to benefits

Q: If the President signs the final Executive Totalization Social Security Agreement with Mexico it could lead to Social Security benefits going to individuals who worked in the U.S. while illegal. Do you support the Totalization Agreement?

A: I believe that we have a moral obligation to treat all workers fairly. Immigrant workers who have come to this country to earn an honest living deserve the same benefits as everyone else, therefore I would support this agreement.

I support a path to citizenship for all immigrants

Q: Should illegal immigrants earn citizenship?

A: Strongly Support. I support a path to citizenship for all immigrants who come to this country to work and contribute to the American economy. Since the implementation of NAFTA, or the North American Free Trade Agreement, over a decade ago, illegal immigration to this country has increased. Workers in Mexico have been forced off of their land. They have been forced off of land they used to communally farm and in response they have come to the United States in search of work out of desperation and poverty, and this is a direct response to the impact of global trade agreements. I support people who have come to this country to work. I do not believe these people should be criminalized. They have come here because they want to support their families and take part in the American dream.
