Steven Sauerberg on Energy & Oil

Republican Challenger

Stop filling Petroleum Reserve; increase domestic oil supply

Lower gas prices for hard-working American families, who are feeling the impact high gas prices have on their wallets at the pump and the grocery store. We must: increase our domestic oil supply and refining capacity, and stop filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Currently, the SPR contains enough oil to supply the US for almost two weeks should a disruption in commercial oil supply occur. By continually filling the SPR, our government is increasing demand for oil and driving up gas prices.

End dependence on foreign oil: clean coal, wind & solar

We must develop alternative energy technology, such as clean coal, solar, wind and natural gas to end the stranglehold that hostile foreign dictators possess over our energy supply and policy.

Increase research into alternative fuels

Increase research into alternative fuels, especially ethanol, which directly benefits Illinois farmers. Further utilizing alternative fuels will lower gas prices, bolster the economy, and decrease our reliance on foreign dictators and hostile countries for oil. We can expand technology and conduct this research without funding from tax increases.

Suspend the federal gas tax

Sauerberg said, "Gas prices are spiraling out of control and our economy is sinking," adding he would favor a proposal to suspend the federal gas tax to help alleviate some financial burdens. "The dramatic increase in the price of gas has led to somewhat of a bonus to the U.S. government in terms of tax revenues," he said. "I think the government can afford to help out the American people in this particular instance and cut this tax back."
