Protect 9 million acres on northern shore of Alaska

When statehood came to Alaska, President Dwight Eisenhower realized that there were vast areas of land that needed to be allocated among the state and federal governments, Eskimos and other Native Americans, and some private interests. The House of Representatives was able to address one especially sensitive issue, with legislation recommending that 9 million acres of pristine land along the northern shore of Alaska be protected permanently from any commercial development. When the two Alaska senators blocked Senate action, President Eisenhower accomplished his goal by establishing the Arctic National Wildlife Range "for the purpose of preserving unique wildlife, wilderness and recreational values." More funds for wildlife refuges and recreational areas

Those of us who venerated Theodore Roosevelt's example were determined that, with our rapidly increasing population and proliferating industrialization, our extraordinary natural recourses and national beauty would not be "civilized off the face of the earth."

The year 1958 saw, for example, the passage of legislation to provide more funds for acquiring wildlife refuges and to make the improvement of fish and wildlife resources a specific purpose in federal water resource construction; legislation long urged by conservationists was enacted to make applicable on military lands the fishing, hunting, and trapping laws of the states and territories in which such lands are located. A commission was established to survey the future needs of our expanding population for recreational areas.

Protect and improve our national forests, parks, & fisheries

Part of our Nation's precious heritage is its natural resources. New projects in which the Federal Government has a part must be economically sound, with local sharing of cost wherever appropriate and feasible. The Federal Government will continue to construct and operate economically sound flood control, power, irrigation and water supply projects wherever these projects are beyond the capacity of local initiative, public or private, and consistent with the needs of the whole Nation. Recommendations will be made for the adoption of:

A uniform and consistent water resources policy;
A revised public lands policy; and
A sound program for safeguarding the domestic production of critical and strategic metals and minerals.
