George Allen on Social SecurityRepublican Senate Challenger |
Kaine asked Allen if he would finally agree that privatizing Social Security was a bad idea. Allen stated that in addition to his age and income adjustment proposals, he would be looking for new options for people to provide for themselves in their retirement years. Kaine countered that he believes Allen still agrees with supporting the privatization of Social Security. Kaine said he would fight against that proposal.
Marshall and Radtke said they could support a gradual increase in the retirement age.

A: My goal is to increase and expand safe retirement opportunities for working men and women. I am committed to preserving and protecting Social Security to ensure its solvency for future generations. In the past, I have sponsored legislation to repeal the 1993 tax increase on Social Security benefits and eliminate the Government Pension Offset and Windfall elimination. Also, I support a Social Security “lock box.” I will only support plans to reform Social Security if they do not adversely affect those already receiving or those who are about to collect Social Security benefits.
Allen adds, Provide workers with additional options for more personalized and better private retirement benefits.
The mission of the Alliance for Retired Americans is to ensure social and economic justice and full civil rights for all citizens so that they may enjoy lives of dignity, personal and family fulfillment and security. The Alliance believes that all older and retired persons have a responsibility to strive to create a society that incorporates these goals and rights and that retirement provides them with opportunities to pursue new and expanded activities with their unions, civic organizations and their communities.
