$100M grant program to partner with crisis pregnancy clinics

Last year, Tennessee's budget funded ultrasound machines at crisis pregnancy clinics across the state. I'm proposing a $100 million grant program to partner with nonprofits that serve mothers, fathers, and families during a crisis pregnancy. With that, our Office of Faith-Based Initiatives has a unique ability to engage nonprofits and community organizations. It's time to equip them with the resources they need to play a bigger role, as we endeavor to better serve children and families.

Ready to ban abortion if Roe v. Wade overturned

My office has proposed and supported some of the soundest pro-life legislation in the country. Thanks to our partners in the legislature, we passed thoughtful laws that protected the unborn and supported expecting mothers. If the federal courts return full authority to the states [by overturning Roe v. Wade], Tennessee's laws will automatically provide the maximum possible protection and offer a glimmer of redemption as America reconciles our troubled past.

Signed Tennessee fetal heartbeat abortion ban

SB2196: Creates the Class C felony of performing or inducing an abortion upon a pregnant woman whose unborn child has a fetal heartbeat.

Planned Parenthood opinion The bill, one of the most restrictive abortion bills in the country, bans abortion at nearly every stage of pregnancy, including before most people even know they're pregnant.

Seeing premature granddaughter strengthened my resolve

I've proposed legislation that would defend and protect the life of an unborn baby from the time their heartbeat can be detected. I want to share a personal story that has strengthened my resolve.

A few months ago, my son and his wife had identical twin baby girls, delivered months before they were due, at a time when most babies their size would still be in their mother's womb. When I walked into the neonatal intensive care unit, I stared in wonder at a 1-lb-5-oz baby girl with tubes and cords and monitors, fighting for her life. As I watched little Annie, I was reminded once again that every life is precious. Every life is precious, and we will support pro-life policy in this state because everything precious is worth protecting.

Ban abortion, even for rape and incest

Q: Abortion: Mostly ban or mostly legal?

Karl Dean (D): Legal. "Between her and her doctor and her family and her faith. Politicians should not insert themselves."

Bill Lee (R): Ban, even for rape and incest. "Any restriction that would limit abortions." Supports "Heartbeat Bill" banning at around six weeks.

Q: Allow employers to withhold contraceptive coverage from employees if disagree with it morally?

Karl Dean (D): Unknown.

Bill Lee (R): Yes. "Our constitution protects an absolute, fundamental right to live your life--at home & in the workplace--according to your values & your faith."

Q: Let Planned Parenthood receive public funds for non-abortion healthcare?

Karl Dean (D): Unclear. Supportive of expanding women's health services.

Bill Lee (R): No. Make sure they don't get another dime of state money.

Against abortion: life begins at conception

I believe that life begins at conception and that every life is precious. Our unborn are gifts from God, and we can't live in a society where children are treated as disposable. That's why I am pro-life, pro-child, and pro-family. We owe it to every parent to make Tennessee the best state in the country to raise a family.
