The bulk of the grant funds, over $6.9 million, are from the state's $70 million Open Space, Recreation, Bay and Watershed Protection Bond that was proposed by Governor Carcieri and approved by voters in 2004. Additional funding of $0.6M comes from EPA Clean Water Act grants.
"Protecting our natural resources is one of the greatest gifts we can share with all citizens and is critical to preserving our quality of life," said Gov. Carcieri. "Since 2003, we have preserved more than 10,000 acres of open space, and these latest grants enable us to protect an additional 1,300 across Rhode Island. We will preserve open space, enhance our water quality, and protect fishing grounds on our waterways."
