Robert Charles on Corporations

Roll back regulations and unfunded mandates

Q: What steps would you take as governor to boost economic growth?

PINGREE: The top thing that is holding back our companies and our ability to grow our economy [is] the high cost of housing. Young people who feel like they can't afford to buy a house. Employers not being able to find employees because there's nowhere affordable to rent.

BENNETT: I will launch a "Maine Growth Fund." Startup leaders cannot access capital, particularly at that mezzanine level between being small and being very successful and large. A Maine growth fund can help fill that gap.

CHARLES: I am going to roll back, work with the legislature and do as much as I can through rulemaking, to roll back a combination of the property tax unfunded mandates, the unfunded mandates that drive our property taxes to this very high level that is unsustainable. Highest ever in our history and highest income in the United States. Roll back regulations on businesses. I'm going to cut the income tax methodically over four years.
