Mark Kelly on Abortion

Get rid of the filibuster to support abortion rights

Q: Would you support getting rid of the filibuster in order to support abortion rights, to codify Roe v. Wade into law?

KELLY: Yeah, I would. Yeah. When we were looking at voting rights legislation, I voted for that as well. I spent 15 years at NASA flying the Space Shuttle. If NASA had the rules of the United States Senate, the rocket ship would never leave the launchpad.

Men shouldn't make decisions about women and abortion

Abortion has often seemed like a millstone hanging on GOP candidates since the Supreme Court erased federal abortion rights in June, and Masters has taken heat over his changing rhetoric on the issue. But on Thursday, he told viewers that [Democratic opponent Sen. Mark] Kelly is the radical on the issue.

But Kelly unloaded what may have been the most memorable lines in the debate answering a question about abortion that turned into a scathing, personal indictment of Masters.

"I think we all know guys like this," Kelly said in a flash of passion. "Guys that think they know better than everyone about everything."

"You think you know better than women and doctors about abortion. You even think you know better than seniors about Social Security. You think you know better than veterans about how to win a war. Folks, we all know guys like this, and we can't be letting them make decisions about us because it's just dangerous."

Against making it harder for women to access health care

Q: Support Planned Parenthood receiving government funds for non-abortion-related care?

Mark Kelly: Yes. Endorsed by Planned Parenthood Action Fund. Will "reject efforts to make it harder for women to access vital health care services."

Martha McSally: No. Voted to let states deny Medicaid funding to health care providers who perform abortions. Supported health care plan that would have cut Planned Parenthood funding.

Supports every woman's right to choose

Mark supports every woman's right to choose how and when to start her family. He'll reject efforts to make it harder for women to access vital health care services, whether reproductive health care for themselves or critical programs like CHIP and WIC that help women and children stay healthy.

Supports reproductive rights, health and gender equity

In a written statement, Lola Sophia Bovell, executive director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona, said Kelly "has demonstrated his commitment to eradicating the wage gap and lack of paid family leave giving all Arizonans the ability to lead full lives." The organization noted Kelly's support for reproductive rights and his commitment to "the broader goal of empowering people through health and gender equity by supporting comprehensive sex education, equal pay, and curbing gun violence."

Pro-Planned Parenthood, according to CC survey.

Kelly supports the Christian Coalition survey question on abortion funding

The Christian Coalition inferred whether candidates agree or disagree with the statement, 'Public Funding of Abortions (Such as Govt. Health Benefits and Planned Parenthood)?' Self-description by Christian Coalition of America: "These guides help give voters a clear understanding of where candidates stand on important pro-family issues" for all Senate and Presidential candidates.
