JD Vance on Budget & Economy

Spending like American Rescue Plan drove up costs

Vance went after [Democratic opponent Rep. Tim] Ryan for supporting federal spending bills, including the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan that critics say drove up costs at the grocery story and the gas pump. He also blamed President Joe Biden's administration for contributing to high energy prices.

Ryan, for his part, argued that legislation like the infrastructure package and CHIPS Act will bring jobs to Ohio and encourage manufacturing in the U.S.

It's time to get inflation under control

Why do we need a "transportation equity" agency to ensure that we don't have too many male truck drivers? Why are we spending billions on battery technologies that are controlled by the Chinese Communist Party and built by Chinese workers? The result of needless spending is runaway inflation, which has made it harder for normal Americans to afford basic necessities. Inflation has hit our seniors especially hard, many of whom live on a fixed income. It's time to get this inflation under control.

Economic collapse due to social decay, not just job loss

When I mention the plight of my community [in Appalachia], I am often met with an explanation like this: "The prospects for working-class whites have worsened, because their economic opportunities have declined. If they only had better access to jobs, other parts of their lives would improve as well."

I once held this opinion myself. But experience taught me that this story of economic insecurity is incomplete.

Economists worry about the decline of the industrial Midwest and the hollowing out of the economic core of working whites. They mean that manufacturing jobs have gone overseas and middle-class jobs are harder to come by for people without college degrees. Fair enough--I worry about those things, too. But this book is about something else: what goes on in the lives of real people when the industrial economy goes south. It's about reacting to bad circumstances in the worst way possible. It's about a culture that increasingly encourages social decay instead of counteracting it.
