Dangerous border with Mexico must be secured

Our immigration policy must address the current issues of the 21st century immigration. Our border with Mexico has proven to be dangerous and must be secured with adequate border security. In addition to our borders, we need to address the immigrants who are living in the United States illegally. We need a plan that deals with illegal immigrants and includes a strategy for economic benefit. Our priority should be the security of our borders and protection of our citizens in both safety and jobs. Any type of immigration reform that is considered in the future must also protect the jobs of American workers and include a provision to include a provision to monitor visa holders when they enter the country and when they exit the country (if they exit). Voted NO on driver's license for undocumented immigrants

Excerpts from Legislative Counsel's Digest:

Existing law requires the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to require an applicant for an original driver's license or identification card to submit satisfactory proof that the applicant's presence in the United States is authorized under federal law.
This bill would require the department to issue an original driver's license to a person who is unable to submit satisfactory proof that the applicant's presence in the US is authorized under federal law if he or she meets all other qualifications for licensure and provides satisfactory proof to the department of his or her identity and California residency.

Status:Concurrence vote passed House, 55-21-2; passed Senate 28-8-3; approved by Gov.Brown 10/3/2013

OnTheIssues Explanation: Undocumented immigrants have no federal authorization; this bill allows them to get a state driver's license regardless of their lack of federal authorization.
