Father Federal Reserve governor; mother crafted Pell Grants

She spent her career in public service focused on foreign policy -- first as assistant secretary of state for Africa affairs during the Clinton administration, then as Obama's ambassador to the U.N. and, in his second term, as national security adviser. But as a child, she was a student of domestic policy. Her father was a governor of the Federal Reserve, and her mother helped craft the Pell Grant program. Economic mobility and racial justice, she said, "are issues I was raised on."

Foreign economic & domestic imperatives deeply intertwined

[On pandemic economy]: "We confront a profoundly connected set of crises: a relentless pandemic, a struggling economy, urgent demands for racial equity & justice, a climate in need of healing, a democracy in need to repair, & a world in need of renewed American leadership. In the 21st century, our foreign economic and domestic imperatives are deeply intertwined," Rice began. "Tackling these challenges is personal to me. I am a descendant of immigrants and the enslaved, and service is in our blood."

Pitcher at Morehouse College & Congressional Baseball Game

In Congress, he continued the cross-party friendship with neighboring GOP Rep. Steve Scalise that began when they both served in the state legislature. Richmond would also lead the Congressional Black Caucus from 2017 to 2019. Perhaps most famously, though, Richmond was unquestionably the best player from either party in the annual Congressional Baseball Game, and Democrats dominated almost every game featuring the former Morehouse College pitcher.

Against divisiveness; Americans sink or swim together

"One of the critical reasons why we are in such a difficult spot, whether with respect to the pandemic or economy, national cohesion, racial justice issues is because we are now burdened with leadership in the White House that thrives on dividing us and pitting Americans against each other," she said. "We absolutely have to move past that to a point of a recognition that we are all in this boat together, we sink or swim together."

Trump has displayed utter lack of leadership, incompetence

She continued, "He has demonstrated utter lack of leadership, utter incompetence. And he's been profoundly dishonest about the nature of the threat to the American people by downplaying it, by dismissing it, by you know comparing it to the flu and having his senior officials do the same, having Fox News do the same. He has misled the American people to such an extent that lives have been lost in the process."

Learned if you're knocked down, how to get back up

I'm the descendent of slaves from South Carolina on the one hand, and of immigrants from Jamaica who moved to Portland, Maine on the other hand. Both sides of my family prioritized education, and prioritized service, and worked to bring each subsequent generation a little bit higher. I learned a fair bit from my experiences being part of that family. If they've been knocked down, as I have on a couple of occasions, then to know how to get back up.

Give your honest and best advice to whom you're serving

You shouldn't be serving if you're not willing to give your honest and best advice. You probably shouldn't be serving if he or she doesn't want your honest and best advice. I've been privileged to serve secretaries of state in the younger part of my career and presidents who I think genuinely wanted and expected the best unvarnished advice from their advisors. At the end of the day they'd take their own counsel, make their own decision, and in my experience own their decisions.

Fierce love of country should override disagreements

We can't take the view that, because you and I disagree over politics or religion, or whatever it is, that we're dismissing each other as Americans. If that happens, our country's going to fall apart. There are people who are benefiting politically from pulling us apart. We, as Americans, can't allow that to happen. We have got to have the same sort of fierce love of our country and tough love that we try to apply in the family context, challenging as it sometimes is.
