Libertarian Party on Civil Rights

Party Platform

Oppose government aid to or attack of any religion

We support full freedom of expression and oppose government censorship, regulation, or control of communications media and technology. We favor the freedom to engage in or abstain from any religious activities that do not violate the rights of others. We oppose government actions which either aid or attack any religion.

State licensing any marriage is illegitimate practice

Government does not have the authority to define, promote, license, or restrict personal relationships, regardless of the number of participants.

Consenting adults should be free to choose their own sexual practices and personal relationships. Until such time as the government stops its illegitimate practice of marriage licensing, such licenses must be granted to all consenting adults who apply.

Right to intimacy for consenting adults regardless of gender

Arvin Vohra claimed that it was preferable for a 14-year-old to be impregnated by an adult, because then they would be less likely to collect welfare. He insisted that child molestation was morally indistinguishable from homosexuality, and accused gay members of the party of "hypocrisy" if they disagreed. He insisted the abuse of children as young as nine should be left to the discretion of their parents. That's only a small sampling.

These comments are wildly at odds with the Libertarian Party's principles. The official Libertarian Party Platform deliberately endorses the right to intimate relationships only for "consenting adults." The party's position on generally respecting the right of parents to raise their children as they see fit, likewise carefully exempts "abuse or neglect."

Vohra is the party's nominee for US Senate in Maryland. Along with the requests to suspend him from his national role, some Libertarians are also urging the Maryland party to remove him from their ticket.

OK to deny service to gays & OK to boycott those companies

Government should neither deny nor abridge any individual's human right based upon sex, wealth, ethnicity, creed, age, national origin, personal habits, political preference or sexual orientation. Members of private organizations retain their rights to set whatever standards of association they deem appropriate, and individuals are free to respond with ostracism, boycotts and other free market solutions. Parents, or other guardians, have the right to raise their children according to their own standards and beliefs. This statement shall not be construed to condone child abuse or neglect.

Let consenting adults choose their own sexual relationships

Sexual orientation, preference, gender, or gender identity should have no impact on the government's treatment of individuals, such as in current marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws. Government does not have the authority to define, license or restrict personal relationships. Consenting adults should be free to choose their own sexual practices and personal relationships.

Support individual’s right to choose, even if we disapprove

Individuals should be free to make choices for themselves and to accept responsibility for the consequences of the choices they make. No individual, group, or government may initiate force against any other individual, group, or government. Our support of an individual’s right to make choices in life does not mean that we necessarily approve or disapprove of those choices.

Right to complete freedom of expression includes pornography

We defend the rights of individuals to unrestricted freedom of speech, freedom of the press and the right of individuals to dissent from government itself. We oppose any abridgment of the freedom of speech through government censorship, regulation or control of communications media, including, but not limited to, laws concerning: Obscenity, including “pornography.”

Redress the wrongs of the U.S. towards the Indians

The rights of American Indians have been usurped over the years. We support the following remedies: (1) individuals should be free to select their own citizenship, (2) Indians should have their property rights restored, including rights of easement, access, hunting, and fishing, (3) the Bureau of Indian Affairs should be abolished leaving tribal members to determine their own system of governance, and (4) negotiations should be undertaken to resolve all differences between tribes and government.
