$93M for LIHEAP: home heating for low income families

Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine (both D-VA) announced $93,123,844 in federal funding to help low-income individuals and families in Virginia pay for home heating costs, cover utility bills, and help weatherize homes to lower their energy bills as winter approaches. The funding is awarded through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) [via] the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

"With winter just around the corner, it is crucial that every Virginian is able to stay safe from the cold," said the senators. "Today's funding will help ensure that families and individuals throughout the Commonwealth have the support they need to pay their bills and lower their energy costs." The funding will be allocated to the Commonwealth and distributed on a need basis. Sens. Warner and Kaine have been strong advocates for lowering energy costs and have consistently advocated for funding for LIHEAP.

Family Self-Sufficiency program to reduce welfare dependency

More than $2 million in federal grants will soon be going to Virginia cities to help Virginia families reduce their dependency on welfare. Sen. Kaine announced that 19 Virginia localities will receive more than $2 million in federal grants, designated to help public housing residents reduce their dependency on welfare assistance and rental subsidies by providing tools and resources that will assist them in gaining job skills and increasing their earned income.

"These funds will help empower Virginia families to pull themselves out of poverty through educational opportunities, job training, and counseling," said Kaine.

The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program, whose goal is to increase earned income and decrease welfare program dependency, administers the funds to local government housing entities. Then, once an eligible family is selected, a contract is established for a 5-7-year period that incorporates individualized training and outlines both short and long-term goals.

Secured funds to help homeless vets find good housing

Sens. Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine announced the U.S. Departments of Housing and Urban Development and Veterans Affairs will award $166,336 to the Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority to help homeless veterans find affordable housing. "The brave men and women who have worn our nation's uniform deserve to know that their country will take care of them when they return home,"said both Senators. "This will help homeless veterans in Hampton find a safe and affordable place to live."
