Make home insurance more competitive & more transparent

Without affordable insurance, the dream of home ownership is denied, even if mortgage rates are low and purchase prices drop. My work on the New England Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve Bank has dramatized that fact, but something much closer to home has proven the point: Insurance on my home in Harwich has risen from a couple of hundred dollars a year in 1987 to thousands of dollars a year in 2010. I do not believe these increases are justifiable. I believe Cape and Islands homeowners are paying outrageous premiums because of catastrophes far from home, like Hurricane Katrina. Insurance providers have refused to release detailed actuarial rates that would prove this. In the name of simple fairness, for homeowners now and for those we hope will join us, I will do everything possible as a State Senator to make insurance rates more competitive, the process more transparent.
