The votes by the NH congress during the 2000 session to abolish the death penalty were votes of conscience [which I support]. My position on the death penalty is shaped by my experience as a lawyer. We have a legal system, quite simply,
that makes mistakes. This statement is not offered as a criticism of our judges or our juries. It is an observation that we are all fallible human beings. Dozens of people on death row have been freed in recent years because of erroneous convictions.
