Troy Jackson on Families & Children

Childcare shouldn't cost as much as a mortgage

First year free: no family should worry about how to afford care when they're welcoming a child into this world.

Affordable for all: childcare shouldn't cost as much as a mortgage. Troy will make sure no working family pays more than 7 percent of their income on childcare.

A living wage: childcare workers are still among the lowest-paid workers in our economy. Troy will put them on a path to earning the wages and benefits they deserve, just like all educators in our state.

Establish right to breast-feed at work

Excerpts from legislation: An Act To Protect Working Mothers Who Breast-feed: This bill provides that it is unlawful employment discrimination under the Maine Human Rights Act for an employer to fail to provide certain workplace accommodations for an employee with a nursing child.

Excerpts from veto message: Maine already protects mothers who breast-feed. This bill adds an additional layer of legal enforcement by allowing multiple avenues to sue businesses both large and small.

Legislative outcome: Troy Jackson voted YES on LD 777 (HP 528); passed Senate 20-14-0; failed House 92-56-3 (2/3 required for veto override)
