Wes Moore on Technology

Data centers do not get to write the rules

Q: You both initially embraced data centers. Mr. Cox you supported a tax exemption and Mr. Moore you signed an executive order to rein in new data centers and guidelines when it comes to the energy they are using but both of you have shifted positions.

Cox: The data centers of seven years ago are not those of today. We have a power grid problem and brownouts beginning to happen. And instead this governor is focused on his political connections. I will do something different. I've called for a moratorium.

Moore: We are watching data centers that are having a greater draw but that is happening simultaneously while we have Donald Trump who removed all guardrails because he has called this growth of data centers essential to beating China and A.I. a hoax. It is important we step in and I signed executive orders saying they need to bring their own energy and power and not polluting our air or water, need to hire local union workers. Data centers do not get to write the rules.

AI can do remarkable things, but it needs guardrails

This is a powerful technology that can actually do remarkable things when it comes to things like health care and when it comes to things like human services. But the human part has got to be important in this, and guardrails have got to be established, and we have to work together on a bipartisan basis to be able to accomplish this.

Give workers hands-on training to succeed in the AI economy

We need to make sure our workers aren't left behind by AI. Maryland's labor movement understands we can't stop this technology. They just want to make sure workers are supported, not supplanted. Today, I'm proud to announce that Maryland is investing $4 million to give our workers hands-on training to succeed in the AI economy. But we can't do this alone. We need employers and workers at the table to help design these programs and build pipelines to opportunity.
