Visas for illegal immigrants, but no path to citizenship
On immigration, both Truax and Oberweis agree that there should be a path to citizenship for people brought to the U.S. illegally as children. But they oppose a Senate-passed bill, which Durbin helped craft, that would provide a path to citizenship for
adults and children in the U.S. illegally while increasing the number of agents along the border.Oberweis said he would propose a different approach: visas for immigrants here illegally, but no special path to citizenship.
Those immigrants would pay taxes and have the freedom to cross in and out of the U.S. but would not be allowed to vote or participate in entitlement programs, Oberweis said.
Truax said Congress should focus first on securing the border.
He said he would resist a comprehensive reform bill because Obama can't be trusted to implement complex legislation. "We've got to get down to specific pieces, and then if the president sticks to that, then we can move on to the second piece," Truax said

Immigration control is intertwined with homeland security
America is a land of, by, and for immigrants. But while we recognize and appreciate the contributions made by our forbears who came to America from foreign lands, we also must recognize that in the 21st century, immigration control policy is inextricably
intertwined with homeland security policy--they are two sides of the same coin.No nation can long survive that cannot--or will not--protect its borders. In a world where the greatest threats to our security come not from camouflage-fatigued armies
on distant battlefields, nor even from nuclear missiles launched from other continents--but instead from chemical or biological or even nuclear weapons smuggled in across a border by a few terrorists bent on killing innocent Americans--immigration
control is no longer a simple question of who gets to enjoy the bounty of America; it is now, in a very real sense, a matter of life and death. We must end this flow of illegal immigrants immediately.
