Help solve US oil addiction with ethanol

Simply put, the US is addicted to petroleum. That puts us in a strategic bind. Because we are so dependent on foreign oil, we are susceptible to the whims of nations and cartels who leverage their pricing to affect their customers' foreign policies. I agree with the majority of our nation's policymakers that we need to be less dependent on foreign oil, but in the long run that's simply not enough. Oil is in a finite supply, and should that supply dry up we will be in a crisis of untold proportion. It is in the US' long-term economic interest to wean us of our addiction to oil from all sources, here and overseas. Ethanol, natural gas and hydrogen produced right here in Kansas could be a huge economic boon as well as a baby step away from oil dependency. My incumbent, so closely tied to oil interests, has a long history of voting against the promotion of ethanol, thereby doing nothing to decrease our oil dependency or to help Kansas farmers who would clearly benefit from ethanol production.

Promote alternative fuels, not ANWR drilling

While we aggressively research alternative fuels, there are capped, yet untapped oil wells right here in Kansas that could be put to work that could add to and bolster the existing workforce while decreasing our dependency on foreign oil sources. I am vehemently opposed to any oil drilling in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge, and I will oppose any drilling on public lands at the expense of the environment.

I will work toward the implementation of a comprehensive national energy policy that emphasizes sustainable, renewable sources which also have a reasonably minimal impact on the environment. Where practical and acceptable to the local Kansas residents, I advocate the harnessing of solar, wind and hydro energy. I also want to see more research on biodiesel. In the meantime, as a stopgap, I favor vehicles that run on hybrid gasoline/electric and natural gas energy, as well as power plants that run either on natural gas or systems that cleanly burn coal.
